Your Special Needs Child and the Edwardsville School District

From time to time a buyer relocating to the Edwardsville area will call to ask how the Edwardsville school district works with special needs students.

District 7 offers an extensive special education program for children. The district follows the criteria established by IDEA, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

The district uses a collaborative team approach in each school building and that team works to identify and evaluate students. The team includes the building principal, a psychologist, a social worker, a special education teacher, the school nurse and the student's classroom teacher. Parents are encouraged to participate on the team as well. Outside resources or agencies also can be brought in for assistance.

An individualized education program (IEP) is developed for the student and resources are gathered to help the school meet the student's goals. The IEP is reviewed and changed as necessary each year.

Regular and special education teachers work together during the school year to adapt course material for all students.

Here is District 7's philosophy regarding special needs students:

"We continue to strive to provide the best possible services for our special needs population by training our staff to the greatest extent, always incorporating the best practice when providing instruction, and adhering to the philosophy that all students should have access to the regular education curriculum, whether they are placed in the regular education classroom or in an instructional setting. As always, we continue to work towards helping our students achieve their long-term goals through mastery of the short-term objectives developed by the IEP team. Our students deserve the best possible services, and we do our best to ensure that they receive them."
